MSHA New Miner Training

To meet MSHA compliance requirements under Part 46 new miners must receive at least 24 hours of mine safety training, with a minimum of four hours of instruction in eight specific areas before they start work.

New Miner Training Topics

  • Introduction to the work environment
  • Instruction in recognizing and avoiding hazards
  • Review of escape and emergency plans
  • Instruction to the procedure for reporting mine hazards
  • Instruction on the statutory rights of miners
  • Instruction on the health and safety aspects of the work to be performed
  • Information about the physical and health hazards of chemicals in the miner's work area, protective measures a miner can take against these hazards and the contents of the mine's Hazard Communication program.

Four hours of training on this material must be conducted prior to the miner working on-site.  The initial four hours of training does allow the miner to work on a mine site under the observation of an experienced miner before completing the remainder of the training.  24 hours of training must also include first aid and CPR.  The worker must complete the first aid/CPR training within 60 days. Remainder of the training must be completed within 90 days.  The remaining training modules can be any topics that are applicable and that promote health and safety at the mine, including on the job training.

Other areas of required training include:

  • Newly-hired experienced miner
  • New Task
  • Site-Specific hazard awareness
